PAUL HEARD WINS SPORTS AWARD - posted 29 January 2012

Birmingham cycle speedway star Paul Heard has won a top sporting award - the prestigious Sutton Coldfield Senior Male Sports Personality of the Year for 2011.

The popular Midland rider, who finished seventh in the World individual final in America and third in the British under-19 final in July, was presented with his award by Olympic athelete David Moorcroft OBE and the award sponsor, Anthony Harris, a local businessman and ex-professional snooker player at a glittering awards ceremony at Sutton Town Hall.

Although nominated in a short-list of three, Paul was surprised and delighted to win the award as he was up against two formidable sporting opponents, top county rugby player, Alex White, and Martin Framer, a motor racing driver who won the UK Formula Vee Championship for two successive years.

It was a great opportunity to promote the sport and as well as making contact with a number of potential sponsors.  It is hoped that the local newspaper, that helped organise the event, will run several more articles about cycle speedway and perhaps even a weekly blog for Paul.

HADDOCK GUTTED AFTER BREAK-IN - posted 25 January 2012

Thieves have stolen two bikes belonging to Wednesfield's British champion Matthew Haddock.  The family arrived home this afternoon to find the garage had been vandalised and two bikes, an Aces Ultra and an almost new aluminium Archie Wilkinson bike, had gone.

"A number of wheels and all my bike tools have also gone" said a distraught Mark Haddock.

Mathew had just recovered from a serious injury sustained in practice which ruled him out of 2011 indoor championships and was looking forward to the new season.  This set-back will be a major blow to his attempt to break into the Aces' first team squad.

Mark Haddock went on to say that he will replace all of Matthew's equipment but like all families facing the recession, this will not be done overnight.

The local police were called and will investigate the theft.  Gary Nash, the local beat officer, well known to the club, will be in charge of the investigation.

"Hopefully cycle speedway's high profile on the Ashmore Park estate and the distinctive nature of the bikes will bring this to a positive conclusion" said club spokesman Paul Bodley.

Irrespective of the outcome, Heard's nomination has already had a spin-off for the sport locally with several artilces and photos appearing in the local media.

"I've just been to hospital for another assesment and basically they are telling me that it's going to hurt (it does!) but I have to exercise to a set regime and go back in January" carl told Spokesman-Online.

"I've had lots of physio and the physio was originally worried that I could cause permanent damage but now I'm told that's not the case, so at least the news is a bit better."

TOP OFFICIAL SEES RED - AGAIN! - posted 21 September 2011

One of cycle speedway's top officials has seen red again - literally.

Riding for his local club, East Newport, Cycle Speedway Commissioner Rob Absalom got his marching order after arguing with the referee during Sunday's Premier Combination match at Sheffield.

It is not the first time Absalom has been red carded.  Only a few weeks ago, on 17th July, he was involved in an altercation with the referee at the Poole v East Newport match when he received a similar match ban.

GOODBYE GREG - posted 26 August 2011

There were emotional scenes at Harbourside last weekend as Polish star Greg Gluchowski said his farewells to the crowd and his team mates before heading back to his home country with girlfriend Karolina in readiness for their marriage in Gniezno in September.

Greg has been living and working in Poole since March and has been a prolific Premier League points scorer for the Seaview side and a model club member always willing to help younger riders with their bikes and racing. Fingers are firmly crossed that he will be back in action for the team in 2012.

ASHFORD "GUTTED" - posted 26 August 2011

While riders will be putting final touches to their pre-weekend preparations, one rider has been forced to sit this one out.  British veterans' champion Jason Ashford has been side-lined with a nagging back injury that also threatens his appearance in the team finals in two weeks time.  Here's what Jason has to say.

"I picked up a lower back injury training last week in preparation to this weekend's British individual.  I didn't think it was that bad until Sunday's match away at Sheffield, when I started to warm up, then I found I couldn't pull at all to gate.  I decided to race at reserve but could only manage three heats at 50%.

"After winning the British Vets individual and team, my other aims this year was to make the British Open Final and win the team finals again with Leicester. I had some treatment early this week but was then advised not to ride so soon with this injury, so this has ruled me out of the finals weekend at Norwich which is disappointing with the amount of training I have put in this year.

"I only have two weeks now to recover and prepare for the team finals weekend, so I've got my fingers crossed I am able to ride in this to help Leicester retain the trophy" said Jason hopefully.

A TOUGH DECISION TO MAKE - posted 12 August 2011

Leon Yelland's cycle speedway career has been cut prematurely short following a horrific accident during Sunday's Premier League match against Ipswich.  During his glittering career, the England international won virtually every honour in the game - British Team medals, Premier League championship as well as appearing in five national individual finals finishing fifth at Bury in 2001.

Spokesman caught up with Leon (pictured below right).  In an emotional farewell, here's what he had to say.

To clarify I did not break my collarbone.  I  dislocated my shoulder joint which caused my collarbone to become detached from my shoulder. Ligaments have been stretched and torn and will take longer to recover than a break.  I have been told by my physio that it could take up to a year for me to get full strength back in the shoulder and I will still be left with a disfigurement.

After sitting down with family and friends, I have come to the decision that I would have to leave the sport.  It has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, but for the sake of my future and family I know it is the right one.

People keep telling me its a sport.  We all love it when we are on a bike, and yes we all crash and have accidents but we have to pick ourselves up and carry on. Yes I've done that more than most, but every time I hit the ground now the injuries become worse and recovery takes longer.  I'm not someone that can ride and not take it competitively.  It just ain't me. And the main reason is due to all the time I have of
work, for an amateur sport - yes, which I loved but no, it doesn't pay the mortgage!

Now I hope I've explained my decision, there are a few people I would like to thank.  First of all everyone at Leicester CSC for putting up with me and all my hassles, especially to Wil Burns for believing in me when coming back into the sport and riding me in Leicester's Premier League team. Secondly to Wednesfield CSC for the good years I had there as an England international, Premier League winner, and
British team champions, indoor and outdoor, but most of all to Roger Ellis whose wisdom is first class in this sport.

There are many other clubs that I have rode for and would like to thank, Somersham CSC, Ipswich CSC, Gt Blakenham CSC and Norwich
CSC but most of all I would like to thank everyone who I have met through cycle speedway.  Without you it would not of made the sport as enjoyable as it has for me.  I have some very funny, serious and

ridiculous memories that will stay with me forever. This is not a goodbye as cycle speedway will always be in  my blood, so see you soon...
