NORTHERN COACHING PLEA – posted 1 January 2014

Two of the north’s top officials have made a New Year plea to coaches in the region to join them in canvassing British Cycling to hold a cycle speedway-specific course in the north of England in the summer.

During the first half of 2014, Northumbria Vikings’ club captain Gavin Parr and teammate Terry Kirkup will be embarking upon their British Cycling level two coaching courses. The natural progression from this is to then go on to take the cycle speedway-specific course – and this is where the Newcastle-based riders hope other coaches will join them

“Now then, as many of you may already know, the cycle speedway specific coaching courses are about as common as a BC rep appearance at our Finals Weekend” smiled Terry.

“So we would therefore like to issue a plea to any other Northern UK clubs (just to keep potential course venue travel reasonable) with members due to follow this route, to let them know so we can present a joint, and therefore hopefully stronger case to BC to lay on a CS course some time after June, perhaps?

“Otherwise it's likely to be a long and frustrating wait before they (and others) can complete their overall training and start putting it to good use” Kirkup told Spokesman.

“We would, of course, be more than willing to offer the facilities at Cramlington to host such a course” he added.
