GO-RIDE RACING AT HULL posted 16 May 2013
Hull staged the second round of the Go-Ride Racing League with
Nathan Everett again coming out on top with an unbeaten score in the under-14 event. Jack Lister created something of an upset by claiming second place with Josh Bellis in third.
The under-12 division was won by Jack Lister in fine style with a run off needed to separate Charlie Wade in second place from newcomers Adam Parker and Jayden in third and fourth places. Charlie Wade was a clear winner of the under-10's from a fast improving Edward Lister and Ben Adams who took his first rostrum place of the series.
The girls section had a better turn out this time round with Abigail Patterson taking the honours from sisters Talia and Elodie Nieto-Charlton in joint second place and Olivia Atkinson impressing on her debut.
The awards for Rider of the Night went to Jayden and Abigail Patterson on a showery evening where 17 riders braved the unfavourable conditions.
RILEY WINS NORFOLK TITLE posted 16 May 2013
Oliver Riley is the new Norfolk champion. The Hethersett rider won four of his six races to become one of the youngest riders to win the event in its 50 year plus history. Rileys only tricky moment came in his fifth outing when he trailed in third behind close rival Philip Adams and Norwichs Danny Margitson.

Top three in action. Philip Adams leads from Oliver Riley and Scott Grimes.
The remaining rostrum places were evenly contested. Four riders were in with a shout going into the last series of races before Philip Adams and Scott Grimes came through to make it a one-two-three for the Hethersett club.
Talking of Hethersett, veteran racer Mel Perkins (pictured above)created something of a record when it was pointed out that he is 42 years older than the next oldest rider in the field!

DEPLETED BIRMINGHAM NO MATCH FOR IPSWICH posted 14 May 2013
Birmingham had their backs against the wall from the very start at Ipswich
Chris Timms went through the card but it did not stop Birmingham losing out to Ipswich in the Elite League on Sunday.
The Monarchs were depleted for the trip to Suffolk with riders either injured or with other commitments meaning that riders from the Combination side had to step in. Monarchs also called on local riders Ollie Riley and Josh Herring as the midlands side just had enough riders.
Timms was on top form winning all of his five rides but sadly lacked the back-up needed to help Birmingham make a fight for the meeting. Winwood and Paul Timms both got into double figures and Ollie Riley deserved more than the six he got with his determination on the track. By the interval Ipswich had claimed a 20 point lead and Birmingham claimed inside grids as the home side raced away with four 7-3 advantages.
After the interval Ipswich did not let up on the pedal and carried on pushing hard and broke the 100 point barrier. Josh Brooke finished top scorer for the Eagles and was only beaten in his last two rides by Chris Timms though he did push Timms very hard. Ipswich had strength in depth compared to the away side and all except Ashley Hill and Charlie Rumbold came over the line first.

SHEFFIELD REMAIN UNBEATEN AFTER TURBULENT MATCH AGAINST WEDNESFIELD posted 12 May 2013
Anybody who says the Elite League is predicable, boring, a waste of time and that their clubs Tuesday over 90's section put on far more meaningful racing, to them I say, rubbish. Come to Sheffield mate!!
Today we witnessed a match that had everything, excitement, passion, emotion, controversy and a grandstand finish. After the euphoria of the win against Horspath last time out, Sheffield knew that only another win would do. However with Adam Stephenson, Damien Zareeba and Jono Birks unavailable and Ryan Hoyland laid up with a stomach bug, it was a much changed side that took on a full strength Wednesfield.
Heat one and Wednesfield set their stall out with a Lee Aris win despite the best efforts of the "Flying Scotsman" Mikey Hewittson as Chris Jewkes traps Pawel Idzisorek at the back and its 6-4 to the Aces. The following race brings a 5-5 with Andy Angell taking the win over Ben Mould. Heat three and Wednesfield surge ahead with a well taken 7-3 from Paul Heard and Mark Griffiths after Matt Smith and Jamie Ball get themselves in a bit of tangle.
A share of the points in the next race from Hewittson and Radek Handke and the score is 23-17 to the visitors. Its heat five and
Sheffield haven't had a heat winner as yet.
Idzsiorek makes a turbo-charged gate of grid four and Handke looks after Wednesfield youngster Matt Haddock and the Stars post their first heat win of the day, 6-4. The following race goes the same way with Smith taking the win and Ball showing Craig Marchant the scenic route around the Graves track. Idzisorek battles for four laps to grab a vital third place on the line, Angell slams in his second win of the day, Jake Read pulls a classy move on Ricki Johnson, but the next three races to the interval are shared making the half time score Sheffield 44 Wednesfield 46.
After the break another shared heat before Wednesfield secure their
second 7-3 of the day from the impressive Paul Heard who now has three wins to his credit and a great ride from team mate Mark Griffiths. The next three heats are all shared despite tactical rides from Radek Handke and time is beginning to run out for Sheffield who are failing to make inroads into that six point lead that Wednesfield now hold.
Heat 15 and Sheffield are on the outside grids. Its now or never. Angell makes a superb pass on Johnson and gets team partner Handke through and the Stars register their first maximum of the match. Three races to go and once more there is only two points between the teams. A shared heat 16 and the suspense is building with two races left.
Heat 17 Hewittson and Chambers for Sheffield, Mould and Griffiths for Wednesfield. Mould takes the lead with Hewittson in pursuit. The riders come into the third bend and Hewittson dives up the inside of Mould and promptly goes down. Referee Albert Bentley immediately points at Mould and excludes him for legging ... cue fireworks.
Mould slides off his bike next to referee Bentley and literally hurls
his machine at the match official followed by various expletives and
then throws his helmet for good measure. The pits erupt with shouts of despair and jubilation as the red card comes out and the Stars are
propelled into the lead with an extra four points courtesy of Moulds match ban. After some minuets heat 17 is finally re-run and Mark Griffiths takes the win but the minor places give Sheffield a 5-4 heat advantage.
With one race to go its now Sheffield 84 Wednesfield 81 taking into
account the four point match ban deduction. With Angell and Ball finishing on the inside grids, Sheffield know anything but a 7-3 maximum against them will see them home and dry. Angell makes the gate with Jewkes and Heard in hot pursuit, Jamie Ball slipping at the start as the rain begins to fall.
Heard passes Angell and begins to slow the race down. Referee
Bentley warns him. Jewkes has now closed up and as they enter the
infamous third bend, Heard slows Angell again causing him to fall as
Jewkes sweeps past. Referee Bentley has no hesitation in excluding Heard and a number of supporters don tin helmets waiting for the Hiroshima sized explosion from the Wednesfield side of pits.
Despite numerous protests, the decision is made and stands and the re-run is a formality with Angell taking the win and Ball happy to take third, credit to Chris Jewkes who battled on to the end. As the dust settles Wednesfield must be wondering how they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, a moment of madness, scuppering all the hard work. As for Sheffield its never over to till the "fat lady sings" and I maybe I was mistaken but I think that was the theme from the "Great Escape" I heard her humming!!

IPSWICH OPEN ACCOUNT BY DEMOLISHING DEPLETED BIRMINGHAM posted 12 May 2103
On an over cast afternoon at Ipswich, a small but hardy crowd saw the Eagles line up against the Monarchs of Birmingham in what was classed the basement battle with both sides still searching for that first elusive win of the season.
For the home team Adam Peck and Chris Osborne were making their home debuts in an Ipswich shirt in a strong looking Suffolk side while their visitors looked under strength, only managing to field eight riders with several of their line up, in all respect, would normally only be riding in the Combination match. But with this all said and done Ipswich had to take full advantage of their opponents.
Heat one started with a share of the spoils with Chris Timms taking the first win of the afternoon with Adam Peck and Chris Osborne
splitting the Birmingham pairing. In heats two three and four it was the Suffolk team who turned up the heat with Lewis Osborne and Williamson 6-4 in two. Heat three Chittock and Brooke 7-3. Heat four Peck and Mower another 7-3 to open up an ten point cushion which the home side rarely looked like losing.
Heat five saw another drawn heat with Chris Timms picking up his second heat win. Heats six and seven once again went the way of the home team with Chittock and Brooke securing their second 7-3. Peck and Rumbold helped themselves to an 6-4 in heat seven and by this time the writing was already on the wall for the gallant Midland side who shared heat eight. Then another 7-3 in nine gave the Suffolk side a twenty point lead at half time - Ipswich 55 Birmingham 35.
Birmingham got off to the worst possible start after the break when Mark Winwood was excluded in heat ten and in the re run Brooke and Rumbold were too much for Widass securing a 7-2 advantage. The next two heats saw the home team score another thirteen points to increase their lead to thirty one points.
Heat thirteen saw Timms pull off a superb pass on Brooke (pictured above) to claim his fourth heat win but all his efforts were in vain as Chittock tied up third spot to share the heat. That's was as good as it got for the away team as Ipswich claimed heats wins in heats fourteen to seventeen scoring twenty eight points in the process. Still Chris Timms had the last laugh as he rode to a maximum with his fifth heat win holding off the attentions once again of Brooke who scored a superb eighteen points in his last match before he goes under the knife for his knee operation.
It was a fine performance from Timms who carries the weight of the Midland outfit on still young shoulders. Ipswich also had solid performances from Peck, Chris and Lewis Osborne and Chittock and well supported by Mower, Hill, Williamson and Rumbold while being lead by Brooke.
A big thank you also must go out to Dave Hill for stepping in
to referee after appointed referee was unable to commit and no replacement ref was appointed.
Its still early days for the Ipswich team with a new team manager who still working on his best pairing and new members of the squad still getting to know each others capabilities. This was a welcome two points for the home club. With a different proposition up next in the shape of Sheffield, a match the home team will relish as they build during the course of the season.

HAT-TRICK OF WINS FOR IPSWICH B posted 12 May 2013
Ipswich went in search of a third straight win of the campaign in the Combination match and were to be given a big helping hand with Birmingham conceding a massive 59 penalty points which made their difficult job an impossibility. So it prove to be with the Suffolk side running out comfortable winners by twelve points 70 - 58 before the added penalty points.
Chris Timms (pictured above) was looking unbeatable before running out of legs in his eighth heat of the afternoon losing out to the ever improving Richard Fellgett. This was another all round performance from the Suffolk base club with every rider chipping in to the overall score.

POOLE EDGE IT IN ELITE LEAGUE CLASSIC posted 12 May 2013
The rain did little to dampen the spirits in this fiesty encounter between Horspath and Poole as the visitors repeated their 2012 success by an even closer margin than their two point victory at the end of last season.
This time however, there were no last lap heroics as Thomas Reed once again featured in a match winning 7-3 along with partner Maciej Ganczarek in heat 17. This presented the Comets with the luxury of conceding a 7-3 in the final race which came as scant consolation to homesters Mark Boaler and Lukasz Nowacki who were left to reflect on two defeats in three Elite matches.
There was every indication of a tight result before a pedal was turned as Poole arrived "fully loaded" and Mike Morgans appeared for his first Hammers outing in ages. It was 44-45 at the break with neither side able to get the upper hand but race wins to Poole in heats 10 and 11 looked to be ominous for the hosts with Tom Reed and Gav Wheeler taking a 6-3 over Lukasz Nowacki in the eleventh to make it 51-57 after Sean Rudman had suffered his second exclusion of the day.
With Marcin Szymanski seemingly invincible, surely drawn heats all the way would sew it up for the Dorset side but their hopes were dashed in heat 15 when Thomas Reed moved on gate gate and the Hammers capitalised with a 7-2 to make it 74-75. Szymanski rounded off a faultless maximum in heat 16 leaving the stage set for the dramatic penultimate race.
Ganczarek had endured a wretched afternoon by his own high standards but he erased that in five explosive seconds as he gated across on hapless Rudman from two to one and created the opportunity for Reed to drop under from gate four. Game over!
For the Hammers, this was a bitter disappointment after their defeat at Sheffield while top of the table Poole headed off back home down the A34 wondering what lays in store for them in their next match when they travel to Wednesfield on June 9th. For Steve Harris, tackling his old clubmates for the first time in a blue and white shirt, it was probably the best birthday present in the world!
Horspath 88
Lukasz Nowacki 14, Mark Carmichael 14, Mark Boaler 13, Mike Morgans 12, Lewis Bates 11, Jack Harrold 11, Sean Rudman 8, Dave Carmichael 5

FATHERS DAY AT THE GRAVES posted 12 May 2013
The second round of the Hallamshire Go-Ride League, at Sheffields Graves Centre track, was one for the dads as Luke Morton claimed top spot in the Open Grand Prix Final. Morton now takes over the series lead from Will Bristowe. The cross training that Luke is putting in is paying dividends as he claimed the scalp of Kyle Holland in the qualifying races.
In the grand final Luke was on grid two with Holland on three and the unbeaten Liam Webster from grid four. Morton made the perfect start to lead round turn one. Webster was having to cover all the passing angles that Holland was attempting allowing Morton to power away for a well deserved win and 25 GP points.
The B Final winner was Rob Mace, who was returning to the saddle after spending most of the year in training for the Manchester Marathon. Having completed the marathon with a very respectable time of 3:39 the attained endurance fitness levels came into play as he had his best race in his fifth outing.
There was an impressive debut from John Avill, whos a keen road and leisure cyclist. Avill was persuaded to compete by his daughter Erin (who raced in the under-10s). Quickly picking up the cornering techniques to compliment his straight line speed, he had the notable feat of defeating both Mace and Rob Mawhood.
James Bunting made the most of the under-13s series leaders absence (Ellie Sullivan being on duty at Leicester in the Womens League) to move into the lead with an accomplished performance that brought five wins. Last weeks British under-13 final has been a boost for young racer, who looks like he has an outstanding future in the sport.
Sam Turney added his second under-10 GP win but had to work hard for his points with some well timed from the back passes. The under-8s also the round one winner again successful, Jack Brownell again going through the card unbeaten, but he was pushed all the way in his last qualifying race by the improving Louis Jacobs. Jacobs led for two laps before Brownell used his extra speed to go past on the outside exiting turn four.

LAUREN DAVIES SIMPLY UNBEATABLE posted 12 May 2013

Showing all her speed and skill by winning both of her gate fours from the back, Leicesters Lauren Davies retained her title with some flair. Nearest challenger Danni Riley also looked top class but she couldnt keep the flying Davies behind her in heat thirteen. Apart from this the Hethersett rider never looked in trouble.
Vicky Brown defeated Michelle Whitehead in a run off for third after both had tied on seventeen points. Her younger team mate Ellie Sullivan deserves a special mention for her never say die efforts against mainly older riders.
