TOUGH START FOR 49TH SEASON – posted 10 March 2014

Hethersett Hawks-Swinton and Co will commence their 49th season with a tough visit to Ipswich in all of the South East Divisions on Sunday.

Although in the revised Division One format this season champions Ipswich have split their squad into two, they will still have a terrific side.  Hethersett have been boosted by the signing of experienced Richard Williamson and the sight of former British junior champion Nick Myhill back in training.

The Combination Division team could be boosted by new signing Daniel Butler, who has not raced for several years, and the return of Calvin Grime. Hethersett are back in the Youth Division after a break but have a young and inexperienced team to take on the current champions.  Owen Wells and Beth Allen are expected to make their

Hethersett debuts after transferring from Norwich.

Action at Whitton on Sunday starts with the Youth League at 1 p.m. followed by the main event at 2 p.m. and Combination League at 3.30.

SWINDON PROVIDE TOUGH OPENER – posted 8 March 2014

Coventry Cycle Speedway kick start their 2014 season this Sunday (9th March) in Swindon for a pre-season challenge fixture, the first of three challenge fixtures that the Devlin’s Newsagents side face before competitive action. Tapes up at 2pm.

Success from 2013 shall hopefully transfer into the 2014 season, though the Wiltshire club convincingly beat touring side Edinburgh 102-77, a side that Coventry lost to exactly 12 months ago.

Polish superstar Konrad Pietak spearheads the Coventry attack and will receive strong support from Daniel Drewett, Mason Phillips, Kyle Roberts, Josh Marsh and Shaun Reynolds, riders that all live in the Coventry postal code area. Dave Frith adds some experience to the side whilst Marcus Wadhams completes the side.

A full scale junior fixture will follow the senior match; the junior fixture is expected to start at 3:45pm.  Coventry are without leading rider Myke Grimes, whose partner is expecting a baby this weekend, and veteran Joe McLaughlin, still recovering from an operation.

Coventry team from Dan Drewett, Kyle Roberts, Mason Phillips, Josh Marsh, Shaun Reynolds, Marcus Wadhams, Dave Frith and Konrad Pietak.

Meanwhile the first pre-season training session took place last Sunday  in very wet conditions.  The rain however didn’t spoil the fun as 12 riders took to track in a session led by local talent Myke Grimes.

Coventry will be in competitive action at their Hearsall Common venue a week tomorrow (16th) against Birmingham in the second of their three pre-season challenge fixtures. It’s the first opportunity for fans to see the ‘Devlins Newsagents’ side in action.
