SCOTTISH SCHOOLS LEAGUE LAUNCHED - posted 30 January 2012
An exciting new development in Scotland is reported today on British Cycling's website.
A Scottish Schools Cycle Speedway League has been set up with the inaugural match taking place at Edinburgh’s Jack Kane Centre on Friday 3 February 2012.
Up to six schools from South East Scotland will be competing in the indoor league which will take place on Friday afternoons during February and March. It will then be time to take the riders and their new found skills outdoors to Redbraes Park, Scotland’s only surviving shale cycle speedway track, for a summer term of inter-school races.
Cycle speedway historian Dave Hunting has been busy developing his excellent Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages website which now contains reference to 2,612 teams, a truly remarkable statistic.
More wonderful photos have been added including this memorable shot of England celebrating victory on the 1987 Norwich Union World Cup. Can you recognise Roger Ellis, Martin Hepworth, Les Bowden, Martin Jarvis (captain) and Allan Miller.
Lots of supplementary details has been added inlcuding the names and addresses of club secretaries, officials riders etc.
Never one to rest on his laurels, Dave is calling on Spokesman readers to provide any additional information about any of the teams listed. If you can help out or fill any of the gaps, please drop Dave a line at cyclespeedwayhistory@gmail.com

CASTLEFORD RESURGENCE? - posted 19 December 2011
Plans to bring speedway back to Castleford includes plans for a cycle speedway track.
Pete Hibberd, who was team manager of the Castleford Kings speedway team 32 years ago, is putting together a team to represent the town. Keen to see the proposed new development as a multi-functional facility, Hibberd said
“I am happy to include a highway training school to prepare road riders for the MOT bike test and a cycle speedway track which is an excellent way of introducing children and indeed teenagers to the sport of speedway. Many of our country’s top international speedway riders began on cycle speedway."
Our thanks to Tim Metcalfe for bringing this to our attention.

TYNESIDE STIRRINGS ON-LINE - posted 12 November 2011
It isn't just on the track where things are stirring on Tyneside. Two important websites have been set up and expanded over recent months. One is Terry Kirkup's and the other is the brainchild of Keith Dyer. Keith's site has a wider scope and encompasses the sport throughout the whole of the North East and from its early beginnings, including the long-lost Catterick Lions Army team from 1950/51.
Keith and Jim Smith (winners of the 1967 Tyneside Best Pairs - as reported in "50 Years of Cycle Speedway") were down in London this week, to meet some members of the VCSRA and to trawl through the British Library newspaper archives.
They also visited the site of the Cardinal Monarchs track in Bermondsey, where Newcastle raced a test match against South London at Easter 1950, but, like the site of the Bermondsey Greyhounds track just up the road, not only is the track no longer there, but neither is the original street. The only evidence of Cardinal Bourne Street, SE1, is a street nameplate attached to a block of modern flats.
Edinburgh Falcons took to the indoor track today (Sunday 23rd October) at the Jack Kane Centre for the second of this season's indoor sessions in preparation for the national championships in November. Session photos can be found on
Guess why this young lady has a tough, seen-it-all, no nonsense Aussie journalist drooling over his words? And why the queen of cycle speedway is a cover girl on one of Australia's biggest sport's websites.

CSN GOES INTERNATIONAL - posted 7 October 2011
After returning from this year's British finals in Norwich, director and editor of the Australian-based Cycle Sports News (CSN), Peter Ford (pictured) is now back in Oz.
Peter has been fully occupied upgrading CSN's website and launching CSN-Europe, adding to the hugely sucessful and much respected CSN-Australia.
"It's been manic" Peter told Spokesman-Online. "Now a light has actually appeared at the end of the tunnel, and I am about to publish an article on my visit to the British Riders Championship. A number of shorter articles will follow" Peter promised.
Editor's Note - What a pleasure it was to meet Peter and his wife at Norwich. Peter and I have communicated across the globe regularly in recent years and it was wonderful that he could make the trip to England with the sole purpose of seeing and reporting on the British finals for CSN. Spokesman and CSN have always enjoyed an excellent relationship which was further cemented over Finals Weekend. It was just a pity Peter couldn't have stayed longer so he could see more of our Fine City - Norwich. Next time perhaps! NICE PIC - posted 7 October 2011
This week has seen the launch of a new dedicated website called cyclespeedwayworld.com.
Explaining the new initiative, founder Chris Shylock told Spokesman
"It's quite surprising when you consider the sport still does not have a dedicated official website and although this site is independent, I hope the sport will embrace the idea and help it grow.
"The idea is simple. Here you will be able to update the world instantly on the latest results and final scores using an instant announcement feature. You can attach photos and embed Youtube video instantly.
"You can post topics in individual club forums. If you want to sell or buy something second hand, the site has a classifieds section making it easy for you to create an advert and attach photos. What we need now is for readers to register and join in" said Chris.
SPEEDWAY GAME IS GREAT FUN - posted 21 September 2011
Exeter Aces cycle speedway star, Craig Nethercott, has asked for our help in advertising a speedway online game that Craig and his friends have been playing for a few years. Craig explains.
British speedway turbo sliders is an online speedway game, completely free to play, and is the only game in the world where you can play against other members online, with up to 20 players playing at a time. I started playing the game when it was introduced on the British Speedway Forum about five years ago, and since then have loved every minute of it.
There are many cycle speedway riders who are members of the British Speedway Sliders Forum who I have been lucky enough to make friends with over the years. Mark Carmichael, Adam Stephenson, Dylan Radcliffe, and referee Andy Moody are just a few to name.
The game is very easy to download and there is a new version coming out soon with all the SGP tracks from the 2010 season. The bikes at first, are hard to control, but everyone on the forum is very welcoming and we are trying our best to expand the number of members we currently have.
Current active members from the UK is around a couple hundred. There is a league which runs each year and any rider is welcome to join a team. There are currently 10 teams in the British league and a pool academy, where newcomers can race in inidividual and team events to gain the experience needed to enter into a league team.
If you need any help on downloading the game, then visit the Welcome section at the top of the forum once you have registered, or for further help, please PM me on there or send me an email. My username is Craig and address is loramski@hotmail.com
Can the best in cycle speedway also lead the pack in sts? Or will the reserves of the regional leagues rise up to the challenge and show the best in Britain how it's done? Pop along and have a go, I expect to see many Spokesman reader's signing up and having a laugh with the rest of us.

Spokesman readers are really benefitting one club's website. Since we posted the link on our Welcome page earlier this week, traffic on Ipswich CSC's new site has rocketed.
"Looking at hosting stats since you added the link, you're responsible for over 80% of hits on our site that didn't come from Google" said a delighted Phil Clarke, the man responsible for the new Ipswich website.
Dave Hunting's fascinating Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages website http://www.cyclespeedwayhistory.org.uk/ goes from strength to strength, so much so that Dave has had to dig deep into his own pocket to purchase more storage space to accommodate the ever growing flood of information pouring in.
Not only does the site list the names of riders but it also contains some interesting snippets about the teams as well as some superb vintage photos. The number of teams listed presently stands at a remarkable 2,400.
We'll take a closer look at the website in a couple of weeks time. In the meantime we were trawling through the Spokesman archive and found this photo which may strike a cord with the website's founder!
