MATCH REPORTS

GOSHEN EDGED OUT AT HECKMONDWIKE – posted 19 April 2013

Heckmondwike entertained new Team Goshen on Wednesday night. Goshen is made up of Bury’s riders who aren’t considered for the first team and still want to race. With only the Dysons having had a match this year, Paul tossed the coin and duly lost, Darren Kent racing away for victory in race one of 15.

Idjiorek carried on his EL form with a comfortable victory and a good seven points to Wood/Watson gave the home side the lead. Race five and Goshen hit back as Rothwell and P Dyson took seven points from Adam Watson, tying the scores at 25 each. Further win to Kent and then Paul Graham kept the scores level, an exclusion to Chris Dyson gave the home side a narrow 40-39 lead.

This was a really close match and the visitors sneaked into the lead as P Graham snatched a second win with Whiting third. Kent and Idjiorek won races with Mark Graham much improved on John Whiting’s second bike. Race 13 and four wins for Darren from Graham and Rothwell with Laura Watson always in contention.

Race 14 and the match changer, Chris Dyson took one, against the fast gating Idjiorek Whiting three and Wood four. Pavel gated, Dyson carried on, fell off and brought down Whiting, who smashed his helmet and had to retire from the meeting.

An easy seven points for Heckmondwike followed, consolidated by a good 6-4 to Kent and Watson over Senior Dyson. A really good match, plenty of good racing and benefits for all involved, not least Mark and Paul Graham who having got the bug signed for Astley, with Mark Mulvey, another returnee, supporting Northumbria.

Both Paul and Mark Mulvey on the form shown could have made the Bury first team.  Darren Kent and Idjiorek were relatively untroubled Jake Wood had a fine 17 points with solid support all round, good to see youngsters at the Yorkshire club.  For Goshen Paul Graham will be pleased with 17 points and overall everyone contributed, (Mark needs to sort his bike out), but ideas of a debut win went in race 14.

SHEFFIELD BUILD ON PERFECT START – posted 16 April 2013

Sheffield made the short journey down to Sandwell not knowing quite what to expect from a new look Birmingham side. With just one new addition to the Stars ranks, namely Hull’s Adam Stephenson, the rest of the team were veterans of the 2012 campaign.

Sheffield made the perfect start from the inside grids with Ryan Hoyland taking the win and team partner Andy Angell keeping lone Birmingham rider Nicky Evans busy, his partner Nathan Groves having got his marching orders for a tapes offence.

With the next heat shared it was the third race when Sheffield notched their first maximum heat score, Pawel Idizorek and Adam Stephenson looking like they had been team partners for years, inflicting the damage. The flying Idizorek obviously had his three Weetabix as he made light work of the heavy track and Stephenson superb team riding skills kept Chris Timms and Danny Harper at bay.

Another shared heat followed before captain Angell led from the front

with Dan Chambers working hard to secure that vital third place and a

Sheffield 6-4. The Industrious pairing of Matt Smith and Jamie Ball, the engine room of the Sheffield team did not disappoint with some skilled riding that saw Ball take Harper on a four lap sightseeing tour of the Sandwell circuit to defuse a Chris Timms heat win.

As the interval approached a 7-2, then a 6-3, saw Sheffield go in at the break 57-39 up, four exclusions to the Birmingham side making their job even harder.

The second half resumed with a shared heat before Smith and Ball smashed in another 7-3 maximum for the visitors. The track now was very wet and sticky and caused a number of problems for everyone, however no one complained. Heat 13 saw a great battle between Chris Timms and Andy Angell which finally resulted in Angell getting his marching orders for illegal use of the leg, the resulting re run giving Birmingham a 7-3 maximum.

The Stars now dug deep and rode out the remainder of the meeting

intelligently, 5-5 of outs and looking for 6-4 of the ins. A true team

performance saw Sheffield home if not dry. Everyone played there part and it was nice to see Jake Read taking a confidence boosting win having contributed so much to the team. Jamie Ball and Adam Stephenson amassed six bonus points between them to underline there team riding ability and the Stars all for one, one for all attitude.

Just the start Sheffield needed to the 2013 season, the big test comes in a fortnight when they entertain Horspath at the Graves.  It has all the makings of a classic match, lets hope it is.

GOOD RACING IN COMBINATION – posted 16 April 2013

In the Combination meeting Sheffield ran out 73-57 winners, with plenty of good racing from all concerned. Jake Read scored an excellent 19+1 and gave great support to his team partner Vicky Brown.  Richard Hudson enjoyed a couple of wins and received excellent back up from his partner Adam Watson who made some fine passes.

Zach Smurthwaite goes from strength to strength with some awesome gating and his partner Matt Parrott is beginning to find his feet.  It’s easy to forget that Matt is still a newcomer to the sport, this being his first full season of racing. All in all two great team performances and a job well done.  The Sandwell track always produces good racing and it was a pleasure to return there.

ILLNESS BLOW FOR IPSWICH – posted 15 April 2103

Ipswich went into the Elite League encounter with Poole Comets looking to get their season off to a winning start.  Unfortunately their hopes were dealt a blow even before they could take to the track when illnesses to two of their winter signings, Chris Osborne and Adam Peck, meant that new team manager Bill Brooke had to reshuffle his line-up, youngsters Ashley Hill and Charlie Rumbold coming in to replace the absent pair.

Ipswich could however call upon Lewis Osborne making his first start in the colours of Ipswich.  As for Poole, their line-up looked purposeful, packed with quality and experience with the likes of Harris, Howells, Wheeler and current European champion Marcin Szymanski.

Heat one was shared with a winning start for Osborne with Poole pairing Harris/Wheeler holding off the enthusiastic challenge of Rumbold.  Heat two had Ipswich's Williamson/Roberts split the Poole riders for another shared heat.  In heat three it was Ipswich who made the break through with Chittock/Brooke getting the better of Szymanski/Howells, Chittock in particular showing he could be right back to his best as well team mate Brooke looking impressive as the pair were to remain unbeaten all afternoon.

Poole hit back in heat four by securing a 7-3 after a mistake by Mower clipping the rear wheel of Wheeler while sitting in second position allowed Nowak to pick up the second place spot. The next two heats were shared but certainly the loudest cheer of the day was for Rumbold.  With Glover/Harris sitting a comfortable 7-3, young  Rumbold dived inside Harris (pictured below) on the last lap going into the first bend and getting his partner Hill through to snatch a share of the spoils.

The next five heats Poole took control of the match and racked five heat advantages in a row and effectually killed the match
as a contest opening up a seventeen point gap. Heat thirteen did bring some joy to the home team when Chittock/Brooke lowered the colours of Wheeler/Harris 6-4 but any last hopes that Ipswich could close the gap were killed off in the following heat by Glover/Szymanski recording a 7-3 over Williamson/Mower.

Young Leyton Glover
looked the pick of the Poole team with some mature team riding which was shown in his eleven point haul from reserve. This was a tough start for new manager Bill Brooke in his first outing and would have learn a lot from this and will take the

positives from defeat and, with the likes of Peck, Cossey ,Pike and Chris Osborne still to come in, will look forward to better days.

As for the visitors, they will be right up there in the mix and, if they can get their away form to match their home, won’t be far away come September. The match was very well officiated by Mr Terrry Ashford and the match itself ridden in a good sporting manner. Rider of the day for Ipswich must go to Charlie Rumbold.

SOLID START BY IPSWICH B – posted 15 April 2013

Ipswich took on Poole in their opening Elite League Combination looking to go one better than last year when they were runners-up to Horspath.  With the first team having to call upon two of their squad, this suddenly weakened the look of  the team, with young Jack Chaplin being called up and Jordan Stant adding his experience even though he hadn't even got on his bike to today due to work.

The first heat got the home team off to a flyer from the outside grids when Poole's Oli Sidwick was excluded when he forced Dan Knights onto the centre green while under pressure from the home rider giving Ipswich a 6-3 advantage.  Heat two saw the home side increase their lead with Fellgett/Stant 6-4 over Briggs/Chant pairing making the most of the inside grids.

Heat three saw Matt Hill shephered team mate Lauren Jacobs home as they split the Poole pairing 5-5.  Heat four was shared.  Poole got their first success in heat five Chant and Briggs 6-4 getting the better of Hill/Jacobs.  Heat fivewas also shared as Knights saw off Bristow and Smith.  In heats seven and eight Ipswich did the damage, firstly through Fellgett/Stant out-thinking Sidwick/Instone and secured a 7-3.  Not to be out-done Jacobs/Knights secured the points for Ipswich with another 7-3, Knights allowing Jacobs to get in front while holding off the challenge of Chant /Briggs.

Heat nine saw a change giving young Chaplin his chance to shine.  He didn't let anyone down with a clever ride after Fellgett held up Callum Albin on the first bend.  The only thing was Fellgett had to hold off the challenge as well trying not to run into the back young Chaplin.  Heats eleven and twelve went to the home team 6-3 after Smith was excluded for moving while “Under orders”.  Hill/Stant then got the

better of Albin/Bristow 7-3.  Poole did have a final say as Instone/Briggs beat the tiring Stant and Chaplin 7-3 .

Thanks to referee Richard Hunt for stepping in to take charge.

BIRMINGHAM LOOK TO THE POSITIVES – posted 14 April 2013

It was perhaps not the Elite League debut the new look Birmingham team was looking for and also in new surroundings but the side will take a lot of positives from this meeting as they head to Poole in a fortnight’s time.

Birmingham looked a lot different to the team that finished last season at home to Ipswich as only Timms, Winwood and Groves were in that same side. The Monarchs drafted in Nicky Evans and Kieron Jones from Newport, Chris Parish from Bury, Danny Harper from Swindon and Ollie Riley.

Sheffield took an early advantage as Ryan Hoyland won heat one as Groves was excluded for moving at the tapes. Jones and Parish put in a good team performance to keep the scores level in heat two but then the first 7-3 of the afternoon came in favour of the Yorkshire outfit as Stephenson kept guard for Pawel Idziorek.

Heat four took a third try from the gates as twice Nathan Groves was clamped at the first corner and in heat five Evans was excluded for a start-line infringement. By then the visitors had a ten point lead but Chris Timms claimed a heat win, the first for a Monarch, to get a 5-5 share. Heat seven then saw yet another tape infringement this time for David Ball and the Stephenson/Idziorek pair capitalised with a 7-2 to make it 41-26.

Heat nine saw Winwood get excluded for a questionable decision as he defended position from Jake Reed. By the interval it was 52-34 to the Stars. Heat 13 after the break brought the meeting back to life as Andy Angell got excluded as he put his foot up and clipped Timms. From the restart Harper and Timms claimed a 7-3.

Birmingham looked the stronger of the sides in the second half but the damage was done in the first nine heats and Sheffield came out winners.  Manager Mark Winwood and captain Chris Timms were both very pleased with the team’s performance as the side all dug in and did well on a very wet track and a track which even some of the home riders have not ridden much in anger.

Coventry hosted Leicester in two highly entertaining Mildand League Division Two matches, the Coventry youngsters showing considerable improvement from the 2012 season and contributing fully to some very close racing.

The all-female Lions never looked troubled, however there was lots of competition for the minor places in most races to keep the crowd entertained.  Lauren Davies and Michelle Whitehead remained unbeaten for the visitors whilst only Josh Marsh and Dan Drewitt could win races for Coventry.
