How did you get into cycle speedway?
My brother Dec. He was racing for the Monarchs at the time and I thought it looked like fun.

What team do you ride for?
This season and last I rode for the Leicester Lions Combination team but mostly I rode for the Monarchs.

How long have you been riding cycle speedway?
I started riding in 2004 so that's four years.

How ell do you think you did last season?
Quite good i think.  With the team, I started off a bit slow but by the end of the season I think I topped the averages.  I was pleased with that.  Individually, not too bad.  I only did three rounds of the BYJL and missed the Nationals by a couple of points. I did not compete in the Womens Championships.

So why didn't you compete in the Women's champinship at Horspath in 2007?
I was in Canada visiting my relatives in Vancouver.  We were there for three weeks and had a great time but I was very disappointed that I could not race in the Women's individual as I thought I had a good chance of winning the under-16 title at least.

Which girl rider do you admire/fear?
I don’t  fear any of the girls really but I admire all of them. There are some great girl riders to look out for, Lucy Whitehead, Jess Lamb, Rachel Edge, Lauren Jacobs, I think are the top riders. And girls that are up and coming like myself and Michele Whitehead who is getting better and better and is one to look out for in the future. Others like Charlie Elitts and Louise Carmichael, can beat anybody on their day. Lucy has been so good to me and its great to have a British champion to ride with most weekends, I have learned alot from her.

Who has inspired you?
My brother Dec, He has won so many titles and it just gives me that push to carry on and try and win a title on my own. My mam and dad they do so much for me. And all the girls at Leicester.

Would you like to see an all-women's league?
It would be great to have that happen but it might not happen for a couple of years yet as there are still a lot of the younger girls still to get more experience at riding at a good level.

Why do you like cycle speedway so much?
Well, for one it keeps you fit, but I do like the competition of the races. It can be very intense  sometimes in big races - but it's just a great bike sport.

How does it feel to win the women's team title two years in a row?
Its feels great.  Our team just gets stronger and stronger. With Lucy being one of the top riders it gives us all confidence, And when you have got back up like Michele, Jenna, and Kat our team will get better and better.

What are your plans for the future?
Well, just trying to get better really.  I would love to win the Women's title one day.  I think I have a good chance of the under-16 title this year which would by great. And just keep helping my club the Leicester Monarchs.

Do you have any favorite tracks?
I really like my own track at Leicester because its big and fast but with the other tracks I just do the best i can.  I do like biggish tracks though so hopfully Poole will suit my style.

Would you like to thank anybody Amy?
Yes I would like to thank my brother for getting me into cycle speedway, my Mam and Dad for taking me all over the country and everyone at Leicester. They have been so good to me.

Thank you Amy

PRESSURE GROWS FOR UNDER-13 GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP - posted 22 February 2008rosiewoollard03

British Girls champion Rosie Woollard is disappointed that after winning the under-10’s title for the last two years, she has to move upto the under-16’s age category as there is no girls under 13’s national championship.

“It just doesn’t seem fair” said the Ipswich racer. “I am still going to Newport to race against the boys and beat some of them” Rosie continued, “but it would be nicer to have a girls competition”.

It does seem strange that there is a girls under 10’s, under 16’s and senior but no under 13’s.

Ipwich club secretary Ivan Pike takes up the challenge.

"There are a number of girls who have moved up from last season and I doubt that many will have the enthusiasm and dedication like Rosie.  I personally think that if the under-10’s was a separate competition just for girls, the numbers would be supported.  The least they could do for the over 10’s girls is have an under-13’s championships. We should be encouraging girls and boys - not putting hurdles in their way" said Pike.

"In Suffolk we had a girls' competition for under-10’s, under-13’s under-16’s and senior. The numbers were encouraging and due to that fact, we also had a South East Girls Championship for the same age groups.  I think every club secretary should ask every single girl racer would they enter a separate girls British Championship in all ages."
