BRITISH UNDER-16 FINAL

REED DOMINATES UNDER-16 EVENT - posted 25 August 2008

Thomas Reed turned in a superlative performance to win the British under-16 individual championship at Poole this afternoon.  Capitalising on his jet-propelled starting technique, the Exeter youngster was never challenged as he sped to an immaculate 20 point maximum, in one of the most dominating performances seen in years.

Second place went to Filton's Ben Mould who pulled out a terrific last race, beating Matt Beharrell to clinch the silver medal.  Three points for Beharrel in this race earned the Hull youngster a run-off for bronze but his rostrum hopes faded when he slid off in the tie-break, leaving Poole's Sam Heard to take a deserved  third overall.

After a year beset by illness and setbacks, defending champion Carl Jarvis opened his account with a good win but struggled to make any real impact after that, finishing down the field on 13 points.  Despite winning the Southampton semi-final with a 20 point maximum, Leicester's Robbie Venson struggled to find any consistency.  He clipped Thomas Reed's wheel in his first outing and finished last, a disasterous start from which he never recovered.

There was heart-break too for another of the pre-match favourites, Mark Carmichael.  Taking seven points from his first two starts, the foundation had been set for a serious challenge but he sensationally moved on the at the tapes in the inside grid in heat ten.  Paul Heard's championship ended after just 15 yards.  In the very first heat he clipped Carl Jarvis's back wheel and took a nasty tumble which forced him abandon the meeting, injured.
