WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2009

POLISH TEAMS DOMINATE WORLD CLUB - posted 22 February 2009

Poland dominated the World Club Final staged at LeFevre with Leszno and Torun taking the major podium positions but the host club and the progressive Salisbury club will be more than pleased in reaching the final bearing in mind the level of opposition in the qualifying rounds reports Pete Barnes.

Despite their disappointment the previous evening in the World Cup event, the Polish riders "bounced back" and provided a superb display of cycle speedway. For Lezno World champion Marcin Symanski again indicated his intentions when the World individual qualifying rounds commence early next week whilst European champion Maciej Ganczarek and suprise omission from the Polish national squad, Radek Hanke, gave valuable support.

Przemek Binkowski headed the Torun scores and will be seen as a major contender for the World individual event but despite their strength in depth they could not match the performance of the victors.

LeFevre, try as they did, could not match the all round ability of the Polish clubs but they have the stars of the future and perhaps Daniel Pudney, after a heavy fall, had next week clear in his mind. Salisbury opted to give racing opportunities to other club riders underthe guidance of multi capped Australian international Brad Hoppo.

SHEFFIELD BOOK PLACE IN SEMI-FINALS - posted 16 February 2009

With all the excitement of the Ashes series still reverberating around the tracks, the focus today switched to the World Club championship.  Elimination rounds were held at LeFevre and Salisbury and after a hectic evening, five teams, LeFevre, Leszno, Salisbury, Torun and Sheffield have booked their places in the semi-finals.

The opening elimination round confirmed why Leszno are favourites to land the inaugural World Club title and Marcin Szymanski and Maciek Ganczarek are tipped for a top three finish in the World Individual.  Both were majestic, winning all their races with comparative ease.  But there was cause for celebration in the British camp when Premier League side Sheffield took second place overall, their 38 point tally seeing them into the next round as highest scoring runners-up.  Jono Birks and Jamie Brown showed improved form, each winning one race apiece - a feat former national number one Lee Aris failed to achieve.

Aussie club Salisbury made easy work of the second elimination heat, easing to a comfortable victory while all the action and interest was the race for the second spot.  Pommie team Hethersett put on a terrific display and came within an ace of snatching second place from the famous Findon outfit.  It went down right to the wire, the final race.  Unfortunately youngster Jazz Abbott found himself drawn outside the more experienced Matt Gentle, and despite how hard he tried, the young Norfolk rider couldn't find anyway past his Australian opponent.   Tracking just three riders, Leicester were always up against it.  Dan Pike enjoyed his best match of the tour so far, notching 14 points, but even he couldn't match the flying Chadwicks, Joel and Cody, who both went throught he card unbeaten for Salisbury.

The third and final qualifying round at Salisbury featured five teams as opposed to four.  The meeting was dominated by LeFevre and Torun with the Aussie team just edging out the Poles.  LeFevre look a very compact and competitive outfit and could even afford the luxury of resting Daniel Pudney in his last race, bringing in Paul White for a ride from reserve berth.  Torun also look a class act with all four of their riders taking the chequered flag at least once during the evening.  Despite finishing third, Birmingham found it tough going, including Marcus Wadhams who couldn't manage a win.  Interestingly women's super-star Jessica Lamb was not included in the Poole line-up.

CONFUSION  OVER LAMB'S ELIGIBITY - posted 15 February 2009

With the World Club eliminations starting tomorrow at LeFevre and Salisbury, there is mounting uncertainty surrounding one of the World's top women racers and her eligibility to compete for her UK club.

Having signed up to race in the championships under her British Cycling registration, which deems her to be British and a Poole rider until April 2009, former national women's champion Jessica Lamb was amazed that officials are not allowing her to represent her already weakend Poole team in Monday's World Club Championship.

"I dont know what these officials have against me" moaned Jessica.  "Firstly they tried to mess all the Scotland team stuff up and now it appears because I moved to Australia last October, I cannot represent GB or Poole. It's really upsetting when I have been part of the Poole club for 17 years now and I was going to wear my Poole shirt in the Ladies international."

Jessica looked fast and fit during racing this tour, taking on and beating Ireland's Steve Copping and her own Scotland team manager Dave Baxter during last night's Findon meeting. She also showed the other Poole riders how to get round the Le Fevre circuit today.

It was also disappointing news for Poole rider Kevin Lowman who was hoping Jess could slot into reserve for Poole on Monday as he does not feel he can complete all his rides in the hot weather.
