2012 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

SHOCK AS PIKE MISSES CUT – posted 3 August 2012

There was a major shock at this afternoon’s European championships in Suffolk when home favourite Dan Pike (pictured above) failed to make the cut in the first round.  The Ipswich-based rider, who also rides for Leicester in the Elite League, suffered a major set-back with a gate exclusion but even then didn’t look on his best form, finishing on a disappointing eight points.

Another major disappointment was the absence of two times national champion Gavin Wheeler, one of the Brit’s favourites to make the final.  No explanation was received for Wheeler’s surprise non appearance.

Best perfomance of the day came from Horspath’s Lewis Bates, the only Brit to return the perfect 20 score.  There were good performances too from Chris Timms, Steve Harris and Lewis Osborne who only dropped one point.

Another rider who also had a start disqualification was four-times British champion Lee Aris who was excluded in his fourth outing but recovered to edge through by a solitary point.

Once again the championship was dogged by absenteeism.  Only eleven riders came to the tapes in qualifying round three which meant only two riders had to be eliminated.

Riders like Dan Pike, Leon Mower and Leyton Glover have the chance to redeem themselves tomorrow when they line up in the repercharge, hoping that will be a lifeline into the last 64.

ENGLAND TO SELECT FROM SEVEN – posted 2 August 2012

England joint team managers Pete Barnes and Colin Sutton will chose their Euro Nations Cup team from seven riders.  The managers will want to see first-hand how the riders are performing over the weekend before making their final selections.  The squad is Andy Angell, Lee Aris, Mark Boaler, Steve Harris, Paul Heard, Chris Timms and Gavin Wheeler.

EURO RIDERS' PREVIEW - posted 1 August 2012

This weekend marks the highlight of the 2012 international calendar, the European championship in Ipswich.  It promises to be a great weekend of cycle speedway, one no self-respecting follower can afford to miss.

Few people know more about the international scene than Ian Grange, so we caught up with the Norwich administrator and asked for his views on the European riders’ championship.  Here’s what Ian had to say.

ANGELL BIDS FOR EURO GLORY – posted 1 August 2012

Two years ago in Leszno the European championships final was a meeting full of twists and turns, concluded with a run off raced with an

electric atmosphere.  That said, some top British riders were missing.  Likewise in the 2011 World championships, again some big riders were missing.  Not this time!  Euro 2012 looks set to be an awesome feast of cycle speedway with the very best riders all set to battle it out for Marcin Paradzinski's title.

The final at Ipswich promises to be an absolute classic.  The track will produce fast, breathtaking cycle speedway that will be executed by the best riders Europe has to offer.  The draw for the final will be vital.  Two grid ones will be a massive advantage come 5pm Sunday, on the basis that the strength of riders in the field, or more to the point ability to gate, will make it really difficult to gate over opponents.

Two grid fours is a huge ask to return a winner, but it’s not impossible, certainly not with the ability of rider that will make the final in just a few days time.  Last time out Marcin Paradzinski (pictured below) bulldozed his way to the title utilising his power and strength to full effect on a Leszno track that suited him perfectly.  This time around a little more finesse will be needed to take the title.  The track at Ipswich will allow riders to attack inside and outside, going into and out of bends.

Expect the
Polish title challenge to come from Szymanski, Ganzerak, Handke and Nowacki.  Marcin (pictured below) took the opportunity in early April to race on the track at Ipswich and took to it in an instant, racing to a 20 point maximum with relative ease.  His team mate Maciej Ganzerak also rode in that match, and did have his colours lowered on a couple of occasions.  That said he still looked pretty good.

I saw Maciej win his major four
years ago in Rawicz.  It was the best display I've ever seen, passing around the inside and outside, a meeting he totally dominated.  Maciej needs to re-find the form of 2008, if he can then he has a major chance of glory.

Sheffield's Radek Handke has been on huge form in 2012.  A full house in the European Club final was an awesome display of Radek's electric

starting.  Simply no-one could live with him on that day in Kalety.  He

will be looking for more of the same.  I’m really hoping he is fully

recovered from the wrist injury that has kept him out for a while a few

months ago.  People forget he is the former World number three, via a three-man run off for the title too, so he knows how to construct a score over five heats big enough to be there or thereabouts.

The reigning World champion would usually go into a meeting of this magnitude as the favourite, but I don't think he is this time around.  That said, I don't think Lukasz Nowacki will be too bothered about that, infact it probably takes a bit of the pressure off him going into Sunday.  Lukasz has had, by his own high standards, an inconsistent season, for reasons only probably known to him.  For me, form is temporary, class is permanent, so let’s see what Lukasz does on Sunday once the dust has settled and see where he ends up.

The last British winner was way back in 2000.  I truly believe we will get a winner this time around.  I just hope I have not now talked this up.

Two years ago we only got Andy Angell (pictured below) and Steve Harris in the final, and Andy had a real nightmare.  Two falls in his opening two heats brought two exclusions and no points.  Maybe this was a vital lesson for Andy for  we all know what happened the following year in Eaton Park.  August will be the biggest month in terms of Andy's cycle speedway career.  He could achieve greatness.  I’m pretty confident he will be in supreme shape come Sunday when he begins his challenge.

Andy absolutely loves cycle s
peedway.  I just hope people realise the work rate and dedication that he puts into the sport, in particular the juniors who will be watching him race over the weekend.  They will all aspire to be the British champion and be as good as Andy Angell.  To get there you have to be completely dedicated, even obsessed, to realise your dream.

The Midlands trio of Paul Heard, Chris Timms and Lee Aris will all have

an excellent chance of taking the title, as does Mark Boaler.  They all

lead our challenge, alongside Andy, and I really hope they can ride like

they have been all season and string five rides together in the final.

Heardy and Timms are the heart beat of Birmingham's team, and to be fair equally the England team.  Both can really move from the blocks and around the track are equally as quick.  Around their own back yard they are pretty much invincible.  They will know similar form will give

them a massive chance coming into this weekend.

Wednesfield have signed some big riders this season but Lee Aris (pictured below) is still much daddy of the Aces side.  Lee was in great shape a couple of weeks ago at the BTC and didn't deserve to be on the losing team.  Likewise in last year’s British final he rode really well and hard to craft hard to earn a second place.  He is a winner, knows and understands what major finals are all about, and will have a huge say this weekend.

Mark Boaler (pictured above) was another
in quite brilliant form a couple of weeks ago at Hull.  He was awesome in the final, far too strong and too classy for Leicester that day.  It was a massive shame Mark only took part in the Cup of Nations two years ago.  On that night in Zielona Gora he was on a different planet to any other rider, and on that form would have had a real chance of winning the individual event.  That said he is in the mix this year, and can take European glory, whilst bringing a bit of swagger and style to the track along the way.  If there is one rider I think the Polish riders are a little intimidated over racing and fear, it’s Boaler.

Another Hammer who is in top form is Shaun Rudman.  I could not believe how well he rode in the BTC.  In both the semi and the final he was sublime, unbelievably quick and passing inside and, to the delight of the travelling Hammers fans that day, around the outside around the

outside!!!

The Welsh and Irish challenge will come from Ben Mould and

Adam Stephenson.  Both started the season full on with big results,

Mouldy in particular by winning the Laurels.  Both riders will know

they have the ability in them to be there or thereabouts when they step

onto the track on Sunday.

TOP POLE WITHDRAWS – posted 31 July 2012

Polish ace Przemyslaw Binkowski has withdrawn from this weekend’s European individual championships in Suffolk.

Binkowski will compete for his team, Torun, tomorrow evening (Wednesday 1 August) in the international club challenge match with Wednesfield but has to report back for Army duties in Poland which will rule him out of the Euro champs.

BLAKENHAM PREPARE – posted 30 July 2012

Great Blakenham members are pulling out all the stops to ensure this weekend’s European championships are a huge success.

Beside the usual trackwork that goes on before all major events, the start gates have been upgraded, the grid has been modified to aid traction and gating especially in wet conditions, the pits have been re-concreted and covered by tarpaulin to provide shade in the sun or protection from the rain.

A mini tented “village” will provide a barbeque, licensed bar and communal area where riders, officials and spectators can socialise with the pint and a burger.  The bar will be open from 4pm on both Friday and Saturday.

EURO 2012 SPONSOR UNVEILED – posted 26 July 2012

The promoters of Euro 2012 have announced that the championships will be sponsored by Suffolk-based Select Office Furniture.

“We're happy to confirm that we have now successfully concluded negotiations and agreed a significant sponsorship deal with Select Office Furniture from Bury St Edmunds who are providing all of the trophies and awards for riders and officials at this year’s Euro championship” announced Ipswich club chairman Jamie Goldsmith.

“The company has an involvement with cycle speedway through its Director Ian Johnson and his two sons Reece and Charlie

who are all members at Ipswich CSC and have been competing both regionally and nationally for the club over the last two seasons” explained Jamie.

“Both Ipswich Eagles CSC and Great Blakenham CSC wish to extend their thanks to Select Office Furniture for their kind generosity and hope that Ian and his family enjoy the weekend’s racing as honoured guests of the clubs.

SOCIAL INTENT - posted 14 July 2012

Highlight of the Euro 2012 social scene will be a trackside marquee and outside licensed bar which will held at Great Blakenham recreation ground from 6pm on the Saturday evening, during and after the Junior and Senior Nations Cup.

After the Nations Cups, the draws will be made for the men's semi-finals and junior finals to be held at Whitton sports centre the following day.

ICSF CONFIRM IRISH SEEDS - posted 10 July 2012

The ICSF has allowed Irish team manager Gary Colby to submit the late nominations of Adam Stephenson (senior) and Lewis Roberts (junior) as Ireland's seeded riders for Euro 2012.

Colby had missed last week's deadline and made an emergency telephone call to ICSF secretary Dave Murphy who held the view
that it would be wrong for the riders to suffer from an administrational error.

Murphy subsquently obtained agreement from other national managers to accept the late nominations.

NOWACKI SEEDED IN EUROS - posted 9 July 2012

The Polish Federation has named Lukasz Nowacki (Torun) as their seeded rider in the European senior championship and their junior seed is Patryk Plechota.

Meanwhile Irish team manager Gary Colby has nominated Adam Stephenson as Ireland's seed and Lewis Roberts in the junior.

JUST 23 JUNIORS ENTER EURO 2012 - posted 8 July 2012

The International Cycle Speedway Federation (ICSF) has today confirmed that there are a handful of places up for grabs for next month's European individual championships to be held in Suffolk.

There are 11 vacancies in the senior men, four in the junior and one in the women's competition. The entry stats are women 15 entries (13 British, 2 Polish), juniors 47 entries (23 British, 24 Polish), seniors 72 riders entered (37 British, 35 Polish).

Women's championships wil be held as a straight final.  No qualification needed and no 'seedings are necessary.  The junior seeds are Aaron Morgan (England) and Jack Harrold (Wales) who will be seeded direct to the semi-fianls as will Andy Angell (England) and Ben Mould (Wales) in the seniors.  The respective Polish seeds have yet to be named while both Ireland and Scotland team managers have chosen not to nominate seeded riders.

Speaking to Spokesman-Online, ICSF's Dave Murphy said

"It's interesting to see that there will be more Polish juniors travelling to Ipswich than British juniors, while the home nations just have the edge on entrants for the senior competition.  Any riders still wishing to claim available places, should contact Paul West at British Cycling asap".

"The seeding process was implemented, many years ago, to ensure that weaker nations were still represented in the latter stages of Euro and World Individual competitions (eg some early World Finals had 16 British finalists).  It's ironic that two of the minor Home Nations, Ireland and Scotland, have chosen not to use this option in 2012 and this will lead the ICSF to question whether the seeding process is still appropriate" for future events" said Murphy.

130 RIDERS CONTEST EURO CHAMPS - posted 4 July 2102

A total of 130 riders have entered the Euro 2012 championships to be held in Ipswich in August.  71 riders will contest the men's championship, 44 juniors and 15 women.

BUMPER POLISH ENTRY FOR EURO 2012 - posted 3 July 2012

The Polish cycle speedway association will be sending a huge squad to contest the European championships in Suffolk at the beginning of August.  The Poles have named 60 riders in the various categories including the country's top three racers, £ukasz Nowacki, Maciej Ganczarek and Marcin Szymañski in the senior men's event.

Women's racing is still in its infancy in Poland so it is not surprising the Poles have named just one foreign-based nationals for the ladies competition, in addition to Sheffield's domiciled Sandra Tamborska.
