MOUNTAIN-BIKERS IMPRESS - posted 13 February 2012

Astley & Tyldesley teamed up with Singletrack Mountain Bike magazine to stage a charity cycle speedway fun event at Gin Pit on Saturday. Volunteers worked hard to clear ice from parts of the track beforehand and a surprisingly raceable circuit greeted the riders.

The 15 riders contested 16 qualifying heats, before splitting up into four finals. The mountain bike newcomers, who had travelled from as far afield as Edinburgh and Surrey, quickly adapted to the unfamiliar cycle speedway circuit and visibly improved as the event progressed.

Daniel Burns won the A & T junior riders final, with Dave Haygarth winning his fifth race of the day to win the Singletrack 'A' final. Despite the bitterly cold weather, a good afternoon's sport was enjoyed by all present and a sum of £75 was raised for the Kidney Research UK charity.

SHEFFIELD'S CHRISTMAS CRACKER - posted 31 December 2011

Sheffield Rockets held their third annual indoor Christmas Cracker individual event at the plush surroundings of the English Institute of Sport on December 29th. The event is promoted by the Southey Development Forum with funding from Kids Can Do to primarily provide activities for Children during school half term.  However the event is rapidly growing and gives regular team riders an early opportunity  to test their fitness levels prior to pre-season training.

Forty six riders registered including new Sheffield Stars Elite League signing Matt Smith,  Bretford’s Joe and Lee Kemp, Radek Handke, East Park’s Kayla Whetton, Heckmondwike's father and son Justin and Will Naylor and four riders from Road and Cyclo Cross, Stuart and William Gascoyne from Matlock CC and Bailey Willmott, Tom Weeds from Derby Mercury CC.

The warm up consisted of a 1k individual and team sprint using the 200 metre running track before the riders were split into three groups.  The vast Arena allows for two tracks to be set up with the Rookie/Under 11’s on a smaller circuit and the Open/Combination riders getting a slightly bigger circuit.

Aiden Owen Springs a Major Surprise

The Open event started with wins for Aiden Owen, Kyle Holland, Joe Kemp and Matt Smith.  Aiden then rode a well-controlled race to defeat defending champion Joe Kemp in heat five. Radek Handke, who missed his first programmed ride due to work commitments, then won heat six. This race saw the premature end of Matt Smith’s day, as he took a heavy fall when attempting an inside pass on Radek that badly jarred his wrist and prevented him from gripping the handlebars safely.

Lee Kemp then showed his liking for the EIS with a brilliant last to first win in heat eight. Rob Mace then won heat a nine match race with Kyle Holland who left his charge to line just a fraction too late. Heat 11 saw Radek beat the Kemp brothers who both made the Pole work hard for his win.

Heat 14 saw a great match race between Lee Kemp and Laura Watson. Laura made a fine inside pass as Lee was caught looking over the wrong shoulder, expecting Laura to be on the outside. Lee gathered himself and made the pass for his second win on the last corner. The qualifying races ended with both Aiden and Radek unbeaten.  They would be joined in the Grand Final by Joe Kemp and Sandra Tamborska, who had ridden consistently throughout the meeting.

First up was the C final and the win went to John Turney after he made a good pass on Rob Mace, who then lost second place to Justin Naylor who zipped through the gap Rob had left as he lined up a drop pass on turn one of the last lap. Kyle Holland took the B final but had to work really hard to keep the ever trying Lee Kemp at bay with Laura Watson in third place after Louis German suffered a bike failure.

The rapid strides that Aiden Owen has made in the last 12 months came to fruition in the A final as he sprang a major surprise with a deserved win over Radek.  Radek made his customary electric start from grid three and swept into a five metre lead as Aiden (from grid one) held off Joe Kemp (grid two) around the first corner. With Joe pressing hard Aiden was doing well to maintain second place but crucially Radek wasn’t pulling away from the pair.  As they entered the last lap Aiden saw an opportunity and produced tremendous turn of speed to shoot up the inside on turn one before Radek could defend the corner. Radek then made a valiant attempt on the last corner but Aiden held firm for a memorable win.

Qualifying Scorers
Aiden Owen 16, Joe Kemp 14, Lee Kemp 13, Sandra Tamborska 13, Louis German 12, Radek Handke 12,  Kyle Holland 12, Laura Watson 11, John Turney 10, Rob Mace 9, Matt Smith 6

Matlock Roadman's Stunning Debut

The Combination event produced some thrilling racing with the closely contested event seeing ten of the fourteen riders win races. William Gascoigne, from Matlock CC,  was the only rider to record three wins, this came after finishing in third place first time out. William quickly discovered the fastest way round the circuit and even his leg trailing style didn’t hinder him as he consistently made inside passes after being slowly away from the start line.

Amber Webster and Kayla Whetton both showed that the girls can be a force with two race wins each. But the star here was nine-year-old Will Naylor. Will showed that his inclusion in the Combination event was justified with some quite breathtaking racing as he scored two brilliant wins from his three races. An admin error had seen him omitted from his first race, which would likely have been another win.

A mention also for Billie Owen who had looked in good form securing seven points from her opening two races. Then her back wheel was accidentally wrecked in a heat nine collision while lying in second place. On borrowed machinery for the rerun and her last race Billie was clearly not at ease and recorded only a further three points.

The D, C and B finals were all won with tape-to-flag wins by Thomas Fieldhouse, Stuart Gascoigne and Felix Watts respectively.  The  A final produced a cracking race.  Amber Webster hit the front from grid three and looked likely to claim the win. But the speed which William Gascoigne was generating saw him quickly close the gap and then take the lead at the start of lap three. William held on for a deserved win in his first-ever cycle speedway event. Amber held onto second spot from Tom Weeds with Kayla Whetton just behind in fourth place.

Qualifying Scores
William Gascoyne 14, Amber Webster 14, Kayla Whetton 14, Tom Weeds 13, Bailey Willmott 12, William Naylor 11, Katy Unwin 11, Felix Watts 11, Billie Owen 10, Stuart Gascoyne 9, Jacob Matthews 9, Daniel Rushton 9, Thomas Fieldhouse 8, Alice Unwin 6.

Sam Turney Tops in Under-11 and Novices Class

The under-11’s event involved the most riders (18) and proved to be the most competitive of the day.  Most races were rerun as the mostly under-8 and rookie riders came together as they battled for positions.

Haider Abid, who had scored well at the last EIS event, went through the card with four smart wins for a 16 point maximum. Sam Hallam, Sam Turney and Ed Willis all progressed to the A final with three wins and a second placing. Sam Bowles and Ted Bowles both recorded two wins apiece and there was also race wins for Jack Brownell, Jamie Compton and Andrew Robertson.

Alice Turney took first place in the D final, with Jack Cross first home in the C final and Sam Bowles first home in the B final after quite a scrap with his brother Ted that ended with Ted crashing and allowing Jack Brownell through for runners up spot.  The four riders contesting the A final were so closely matched and fiercely competitive that it took four re-runs before the placings were decided. Sam Turney eventually took the chequered flag for a fine win ahead of Ed Willis, Sam Hallam and Haider Abid, who had led the race until the very last corner.

Hanke Keirin Victory

To finish the day, the riders then competed in an Olympic-style Keirin race around the 200m running track.  It was two laps behind the lead rider before a mad dash of 250 metres to the finish line.  The Open final needed a re-run after Vicky Brown took a very heavy fall as the riders jockeyed for position on the start of the sprint lap.  An experienced track rider commented that  “speedway style blocking was not the preferred technique for this type of race.”

Vicky bravely took her place in the rerun, finishing a creditable sixth, but the honours of first place went to Radek Handke, who gained revenge over Aiden Owen by reversing positions and relegating  Aiden to second place. The Combination final win was claimed by Tom Weeds of Derby Mercury CC, who put his road racing experience to maximum use as he claimed a comprehensive win by a good 20 metres.  The under-11’s event saw Sam Turney triumphant after his main rivals Ed Willis and Sam Hallam crashed on the exit of turn four while challenging for the lead position.
